The Speaker, Kwara state House of Assembly, Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu has called on Accountants to team up with Kwara State government in cleaning up the mess in the polity for greater benefit of the people.
Hon. Danladi made this call while receiving the leadership of Ilorin district of the Institute of Chattered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
The Speaker of the 9th Kwara Assembly said “you can’t fight corruption when you are also corrupt, our investigation on local governments revealed some chairmen are even ignorant of what is happening under their watch but the Treasurers and Accountants are the architects and those even encouraging frauds and corruption”.
“We need you to join us in entrenching sanity in Kwara State governance system and I look forward to seeing you organise a public accountability summit as obtainable in other sectors of our local economy such as education, health, environment among others”, he added.
He further admonished Accountants on conscientiousness in discharging their duties and avoid being collaborators of those milking our resources dry for the sake of posterity, noting that a very good foundation must be laid for the future of our dear state.
Earlier in his address, the Ilorin District Chairman of ICAN, Alhaji Mohammed Baba Ibrahim who doubles as the Bursar, Kwara state College of Nursing, Oke-Ode explained that the district paid the Speaker a courtesy visit to congratulate him and reiterate their commitment and willingness to collaborate with the 9th Kwara Assembly in order to achieve good governance and ensure Kwara regain her lost glory.
Mohammed expressed readiness of the district to provide laudable professional and financial advisory to Office of the Speaker and Statutory committees and sub-committees of the House such as Public Accounts, Finance and appropriation committees among others as permissible under the purview of the law.
“In her unrelenting efforts to key into the ‘Iseya’ agenda of this administration, this District has painstakingly and carefully developed a blueprint that will serve as a guide on how to improve the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the State optimally and reduce cost of governance drastically”, Mohammed disclosed.
