Kwara CP’s wife empowers 23 widows in Ilorin

Wife of Kwara State Commissioner of Police who is also the Chairperson of Police Wives Association (POWA) in the state, Mrs Elizabeth Egbetokun on Saturday empowered 33 widows at the Police Officers Mess, Ilorin.
Mrs Egbetokun, in her address said, Widows in Nigeria and all over the world are particularly a vulnerable group adding that, majority of them go through harrowing experience everyday struggling to feed their families and cater for the education and other needs of their children.
She said, “From my observation of widows generally, I can say without any fear of contradiction that widows don’t want to be beggars. They want to be financially independent and be able to provide for their families.
“They want to stand up and be counted among women of dignity.”
Mrs Egbetokun stated further that, widows can realise their dreams through various empowerment programmes adding that out of the list of 52 widows presented at POWA office, 23 were interviewed and shortlisted for the empowerment programme.
“They will be trained in soap making and will be given a token that is enough to start the business on small scale. They will be guided from take-off to the smooth operation of the business. They will also be supported with food items to ensure that the token given to them is not spent on food but small scale business.”
She however called on well-meaning Nigerians to support POWA to further impact on widows in the state.
Mrs Egbetokun however appreciated the President of POWA, wife of the Inspector General of Police, Hajia Fatima Adamu Abubakar, wives of Deputy Inspectors General of Police for their support for POWA programmes in Kwara.
She also thanked the Kwara CP, Kayode Egbedokun and all officers of the state Command for their support.
