Egypt’s women national basketball team has lost 106-72 to Nigeria in their third game of the 2017 Women’s Afrobasket on Sunday.
Egypt has lost their first game in the tournament after winning their first two games against DR Congo and Guinea on Friday and Saturday respectively.
Egypt were drawn in group B alongside holders Senegal, Nigeria, Guinea, DR Congo and Mozambique, with the top four teams qualify for the quarterfinals.
The Pharaohs were trailing by 21 points at half-time after losing the first and second-quarters 20-15 and 30-14, before the Super Eagles managed to win the last two quarters 29-20 and 27-23, becoming the first team to book a place in the quarterfinals.
This result means that Egypt sit second with five points, one behind leaders Nigeria and one above Mozambique and Senegal, but the latter still have a game in hand against DR Congo.
Egypt’s remaining two games will be against eleven-time winners Senegal and Mozambique on the 22nd and 23rd of August respectively.
The 2017 Women’s Afrobasket is being held in Mali from 18 to 27 August. The winners and runners-up will be qualified for the 2018 Women’s Basketball World Cup, which will be held in Spain in September 2018.
