57 Annual NBA Convention: Over 500 Kwara lawyers attend

The 57th edition of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) General Annual Convention going on in Lagos, Nigeria has been described as the most attended by legal practitioners from all walks of lives.

The attendance of the lawyers at the event was reported to be over 12000 in which more than 500 lawyers from Ilorin jurisdiction greeted the convention.

The NBA begins the convention on Friday, 18th August at the Landmark event centre in Victoria Island, Lagos and is to end today, 24th August, 2017.

It was however opened by the Vice President Yemi Osibajo who was represented by Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Barrister Babatunde Raji Fasola and Attorney-General of the Federation, Barrister Ibrahim Mallami.

The President of the NBA, Abubakar Madmud, who spoke on the theme for the convention, “African Business: Penetrating through institution building” noted that the conference is not only to give lawyers and legal professionals the opportunity to discuss continuing professional development but also provides lawyers an avenue to discuss topical national issues.

One of the participants of the event from Kwara State, Barrister Kolawole Eleje (SAN) who spoke to Pilot Law yesterday from Lagos confirmed that NBA has introduced series of  innovations into the convention order to make it have a separate look from the previous ones.

According to him, people came from European countries and US, the cost of registration was a bit higher than the previous ones but materials that were given out to all the participants justify the fee.

Also, the former NBA chairman, Ilorin branch, Barrister Mobolaji Ojibara described the convention as world class.

He stressed that apart from the innovations and development NBA brought to the convention, the lawyers faced series of challenges in the course of the registration.

He said, “It is very hard to get the venue, many of our lawyers could not also register and those that registered could not get to the venue, such was the scenario,”

Also, Barrister Ayinde Akande from Kwara, corroborated former NBA boss saying the new invention introduced to the convention could not be totally appreciated even as he described the convention as a mix of intellectual gathering and reunion of old colleagues.

According to him, the NBA invented electronic registration in which we all registered online and all the participants were given electronic tablets phones.

He added that many of the tablet phones were found out to be deficient in some ways as some were not workings at all.

“I was in US in 2002 for the International Convention, the crowd there was overwhelming but this one was much, this is the highest gathering of lawyers in Nigeria. The Vice President came and the opening section was held on Sunday with the attendance of the Attorney-General, Ibrahim Mallami.

“The Minsters for Works, Power and Energy, Babatunde Fasola represented Vice President at the opening ceremony and four other governors attended. But on Monday, the VP himself came and we had an interacting section with him, it was very inspiring.

“He charged the lawyers on how to be diligent with duties, to hold integrity as the watch word and to shun all forms of distractions that could stain one’s practise as a legal practitioner. The convention is a mix of intellectual gathering and reunion of old colleagues or class mates way back in the University and Law School.
