Court remands two over attempt to kill Sugarcane seller

An Ilorin magistrate court on Monday has ordered the remand of two suspects over an alleged attempt to murder a sugarcane seller, Habila Salisu in Eiyenkorin town, in Asa local government area of Kwara state.

The duo of AbdulWaheed Yaro , 20 and Habeeb Ismail, 19 alongside others who are now at large, approached Salisu under the guise of patronizing him ,collected sugar cane from him but refused to pay him, rather they started beating him and inflicting various degrees of injuries on him.

According to the First information report obtained by National Pilot, they charged on offences bordering on criminal conspiracy, robbery, causing grievous hurt, attempt to commit culpable homicide and suspected members of secret cult contrary to section 97, 298, 248 and 229 of penal code and section 2 punishable under section 14 of Secret cult and secret societies (Prohibition) Law 2016.

The defendants and their cohorts, who are said to be members of a notorious secret cult group, also robbed their victim of the sum of #45,000 which was taken from his pocket.

According to the police report, the assailants were on the verge of killing Habila before he was rescued by some members of the community who called the attention of the police to the incident and eventual arrest of Yaro and Ismail.

The prosecutor, DSP Ologbonsaye pleads to the court to remand the defendants in order for the police to complete their investigation and that the offenses leveled against them are not ordinarily bailable offences.

The presiding Magistrate, Afusat Alege in her ruling obliged to the prayer of the prosecutor, she ordered that the duo be remanded at the correctional facility and adjourned the matter till 4th of April for further mention.
