Saraki appeals to FG over Police, Justice Sector Reforms

The former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, (CON) has appealed to the Federal Government to plan, without delay, the Police and Justice Sector Reforms which the country needs badly.

Dr Saraki, who was a onetime Governor of Kwara State, said doing so “is the only way we can honour the memory of those who gave their lives to the course.”

Senator Saraki, while remembering those who lost their lives during the last year EndSARS protests at the Lekki Toll Gate and at various locations in Lagos and around the country, sympathetically lamented that today being the first anniversary of October 20, 2020, like many Nigerians, he has struggled with coming to terms with the sobering events of that day. He said, “my thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their lives, loved ones, sustained injuries or sustained other losses at the Lekki Toll Gate and at various locations in Lagos and around the country when security agencies were deployed to clamp down on the protesters and non-state actors took advantage to cause chaos and mayhem”.

Saraki, in a press release he personally signed, expressed worry over the government’s non-chalant attitude to the acceptance of what he called “5 for 5 Demands” which would have resolved the issue, adding that “none of the policemen accused of torturing and extra-judicially murdering Nigerian citizens have been brought to justice; there has been no marked improvement in the funding or quality of equipment available to the Nigeria Police Force”.

The erstwhile lawmaker frowned at the situation where none of the perpetrators of the attacks on Nigerians exercising their right to peaceful assembly has been arrested or prosecuted despite the fact that many of them were identified, adding that instead, “several young people are still held in detention facilities across the country without trial”.
