2019: Group cautions party supporters on hate speech

The Kwara State University Alumni Progressive Forum  has cautioned supporters and members of political parties to stop the use of hate speech that can lead to violence in the state during the forthcoming general elections.
The group made this statement in its communiqué issued in Ilorin on Sunday, jointly signed by its state coordinator, Babamale Abdullahi, Secretary, Ishiaku Jafar and the Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Ajikobi after their 2nd Ordinary General Meeting held at the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalist, Offa road, Ilorin.
The forum further noted with deep concern the heightened apprehension and tension that have become synonymous with election seasons in Nigeria and warned of words that can lead to disaster in the nation.
“We should be cautious while campaigning for our preferred candidates, and refrain from obscenity, name calling, abuse, hate-speech, profanity, violence either physically or on social media platforms.
“Election is a civic responsibility designed for eligible members of the society to make their choices in an orderly manner. Our duty is to come out and vote on day of election and not abuse ourselves”, the statement added.
The forum congratulated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Hon. Razak Atunwa, his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart, Alhaji AbdurRahman AbdulRazaq and Issa Aremu of the Labour Party among others.
The forum thanked the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki for the establishment of KWASU during his time as the Governor of the state.
“Saraki is a visionary leader. Since the inception of the University, it has produced graduates in different disciplines in great numbers, excelling at their various chosen fields and careers.
“The establishment of the university through Saraki contributed greatly in reducing the stress hitherto experienced by indigenes of Kwara and neighbouring states seeking admission in ivory towers. We also thank Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for his numerous contributions in ensuring the smooth running of the University   and pray it continue to soar high with the construction of the College of Engineering Building, and for the giant strides Vice-Chancellor, Prof AbdulRasheed Na’Allah has made.
