A 26year old, Omoyede Oyebanji has been arrested by men of Kwara State Police Command for cultism, penultimate Saturday, Pilot Crime has learnt.
The suspect, was said to have been nabbed at Malete, Moro Local Government Area of the state.
It was learnt that the suspect and his gang members had formented trouble in the town causing panic among residents.
According to police source who spoke to this medium on condition of anonymity, the suspect was arrested following distress call by some community members to the Divisional Police Officer(DPO),Malete.
“The callers told the DPO that suspected cultists armed with dangerous weapons unleashed terror on rival cult members in the town.
“Based on this information, the DPO led a team of officers to the scene, which led to the arrest of Omoyede Oyebanji while cutlass and broken bottle were recovered from him, ” the source said.
It was further gathered that his gang members took to their heels on sighting the police, consequently escaping arrest.
The police source further stated that the case was transfered to State Criminal investigation and Intelligent Department of the Police headquarters for discreet investigation.
” In the course of investigation, the suspect confessed to belong to cult group called Buccaneer. Oyebanji revealed that he was initiated into the confraternity in 2016 through one Kenneth whose surname is yet to be ascertained.
“The suspect disclosed identities of his accomplices as Bayo and Scooper, adding that they are notorious for terrorising students of Kwara State University within and outside the school premises.”
The police source added that, investigation is ongoing as the suspect is assisting the police in the effort to arrest other members of the confraternity who are currently at large.
Efforts to get the state Police Spokesperson, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi to speak on the case, proved abortive as calls and text messages were not responded to as at the time of filling this report.
