As the joint House committee of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Ethics, Judiciary and Privileges prepares to round up its report of the investigation of the suspended council chairmen in Kwara State, there were feelers last night that the affected council bosses may be indicted, National Pilot learnt last night.
The 16 council chairmen were suspended on Tuesday July 9, 2019 by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq following the resolution of the Kwara State House of Assembly on the matter which accused them of over N3billion graft.
The chairmen rejected the action and insisted that there was a judgement by the Kwara State High Court which stopped such action to be taken against them by either the state government or legislature.
However, the move to secure a political solution to the matter split the chairmen with four of them, Ilorin East, Ilorin West, Ekiti and Irepodun rejecting the move.
The Kwara State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Engr. Kola Shittu while speaking on the issue, faulted the decision of the other 12 chairmen for initiating the move in the first place without the consent of the party adding that the disloyal ones among them will have themselves to blame at the end of the day.
Although both the chairmen of the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and Ethics, Judiciary and Privileges Hon AbdulGafar Ayinla Ayilara and Hon AbdulGaniyu Salahudeen who are investigating the matter declined comment on the issue, sources in the House said the affected chairmen may be indicted.
According to one of the sources, “All of the chairmen, with the exception of four who rejected the political solution arrangement, have appeared before the committee and they have been quizzed.
“The report has not been submitted to the House by the committees but they will be done soon probably before resumption or immediately after the members resume from recess.
“But with what we have learnt, what took place there was not palatable and the chairmen may be sanctioned at the end of the day.
Another source who also spoke on the issue said the House can only recommend after the submission of the report and the implementation lies in the purview of the Governor who has the final say on whether to exploit the angle of political solution, give them soft landing or reject it out rightly”, he added.
