He shares his experience with ABIODUN BOLUJOKO on the day he can never forget in Court. Excerpts:
The experience I can never forget in court was when I was serving in Anambra State. My principal called me on phone to go and hold brief for one of his colleagues. I .rushed to the court. The case was slated for judgement. I was sent the particulars of the case but was not given the particulars of the client.
I was told in the court that the judge will not be sitting until about 11am , so I decided to walk to another court since I love hearing court proceedings so as to gain experience from other senior colleagues.
At about 10:00 am, I felt a urge to check in the court where I was supposed to be so as to avoid embarrassment of my case being called in my absence. So I went to the court where my matter was slated only to find out the judge had come earlier than the time scheduled and I found also a man in the dock at the time when the judge was asking him of his lawyer’s whereabout. I came in during the conversation between the judge and my supposed client. The client said his lawyer was unavoidable absent. I sat down and the judgement was read in his favour and he left the court.
After a while, I began to stretch my neck in search of my client, whom I was told would be on lookout for me. Suddenly I discovered that all the matters for that day has been dealt with and the court was about to rise, I quickly rose and said, “My lord, I am here to hold brief on a matter ” which I explained, only for the judge to ask “were you not here in court when I gave judgement over the matter?” I felt embarrassed that the client I was to appear for was the one in the dock as I was coming into the court, I felt very embarrassed.
Since that day, I have learnt to always know my client and also go to the gallery to check the cause list to ensure that my matter is slated for that day.
