Residents of Oke-Foma community, a suburb in Ilorin West Local Government on Saturday called on the Kwara State government to expedite action on the collapsed bridge in the area.
This, they noted, becomes necessary as the rain approaches to save the community from being cut off from other parts of the state.
The chairman of Oke-Foma Community Development Association, Alhaji Ishaq Garuba Onituwo made the call on Saturday in Ilorin, during the fundraising ceremony for a community hall and security post in the area held at YOUMBAS open field.
According to him, the bridge which is the major connection that links the community with other parts of the state has reached a dangerous level that cannot be sustained in the raining season.
Onituwo who gave a historical background of the community which came into existence in 1998 under a Sole Administer of Ilorin West Local Government, Alhaji Haliru Sambo revealed that the layout was named after the Foma stream and lauded the contributions of former chairman of the council, Alhaji Toyin Sanusi among others who facilitated some of the amenities that is being benefitted in the area.
He noted that although the government has said it has awarded contract for the rehabilitation of the facility, there are fears that the project may not be completed on time.
He called on the state government to see to the early upgrade and rehabilitation of the bridge on time to avoid the community being disconnected from other parts of the state.
“For the sake of God, we implore everybody; both the high and the low in our area to please rally round our community to overcome all the challenges we are facing in the drive to make our infrastructural plans at par with the vision envisaged for the area’, he submitted.
On the absence of heath facility in the area, the chairman said it is painful that a community with more than two thousand population still lacks access to good primary health care facility due to absence of a health clinic that can assist the residents in case of any health related emergency and emphasised that government should make its community health base programmes all inclusive for Oke-Foma to benefit.
He said the decision to raise fund for the hall and security post projects was occasioned by the lack of a befitting edifice to hold meetings in order to come out with plans for the way forward in Oke-Foma adding that the community has always been inundated with activities of men of the underworld which has resulted to theft and burglary including carting away valuable materials.
Others who graced the occasion included Chief Imam of Agaka Central mosque, Imam Yusuf Murtador Pakata, Proprietor of Iqra Group of Schools, Dr Aliu Badmas, chairman of the BoT, Alhaji Shehu Saleeman and Ustaz Ibrahim Apaana (Ewa Islam) who delivered the lecture.
