Taxi driver remanded for allegedly stabbing police, Corps members

For allegedly attempting to kill a police officer, Corp members,
32-year-old Akeem Kareem is currently cooling his heels at the Oke
Kura Correctional Service Centre.
The defendant, (Kareem), was last Thursday, docked before Magistrate
M.D Dasuki of the Kwara State Magistrate Court.
He was arraigned before the court for attempted culpable homicide
contrary to section 224 of penal code law.
According to the Police First Information Report (FIR), Kareem
attacked a policeman, one Martins Onuche and two National Youth
Service Corps members, Olaoluwa Isaac and Kemisola Ola.
The defendant allegedly  inflicted different degrees of injuries on
the bodies of the victims.
The victims were reportedly rushed to Abaniselolu clinic and maternity
hospital for medical treatment.
Onuche, according to the FIR spent 11 days in the hospital before he
could regain consciousness.
Investigation conducted by the CIID however revealed that the
defendant allegedly stabbed the victims with sharp broken bottle
without any provocation.
The prosecutor, Inspt. Adewumi Johnson who held the brief of Gbenga
Ayeni, prayed the court to remand the defendant.
He noted that the allegation leveled against him is of capital offence
and that it is not ordinarily bailable.
Counsel to the defendant, Rotimi Oyagbola urged the court to admit his
client to bail saying though, the offence may appear capital in nature
but the defendant is not convicted of them yet.
He said, Kareem is still presumed not guilty of the offence until
contrarily proven.
The court, however, ordered the remand of the defendant while the
Matter was adjourned to 29th November, 2019.
