SPD to Kwara APC’s transition C’ttee: Know limit of your boundary

By Mumini Abdulkareem

The Kwara State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) last night advised the Transition Committee set-up by the governor-elect of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to stop interfering in the activities of the judiciary and legislature, adding that they are both separate and independent arms of government.
The 80-member committee of the Governor-elect attracted the wrath of the legislators recently over its demand for the handover notes from the legislative arm of government through a letter signed by its chairmen and an alumnus of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS), Kuru, Aminu Adisa Logun.
A similar letter, investigation by this reporter revealed, was also written to the Kwara State judiciary.
Worried by the development, the lawmakers resolved to organise induction courses for the incoming legislators to prepare them and sharpen their legislative skills ahead of their inauguration so as to guard against a situation where the legislature will be exposed to ridicule because of their conducts.
But according to the Kwara State chairman of the SDP, Mr Lekan Alabi, although the setting up of the committee is a normal routine that should provide for the two sides to rub minds together and explore areas of agreement and disagreement for them to sort out any issue before the swearing-in. it is imperative for committee of the governor-elect to know the limit and scope of their operation.
“The committee of the governor-elect cannot go to the House of Assembly or the Judiciary for any handover notes because these are independent institutions. That is very wrong and they neither have such powers nor mandate to undertake such assignment.
“I don’t think the governor-elect that set up the committee in the first place gave them such (blanket) mandate. The judiciary and legislature are separate arms of government and the committee lacks the right to start asking independent institutions to provide whatever information they need. I don’t agree with that.
“My advice is that the transition committee should know its bounds and limit it to areas where it is supposed to function and operate and that is specifically with the executive arm. Not to interfere with the judiciary or the legislature, they don’t have that mandate. Their jurisdiction only covers the executive.
He said the party in the state was now on sabbatical after the last rounds of election after the tension and activities of the last election period and come back again with vigour.
