Pandemic: Why Muslims must reflect on inevitability of death

By Mumini Abdulkareem

As the positive cases from Covid-19 and deaths from the pandemic continue to rise, Muslims have been advised to reflect on the inevitability of death so as not to be caught unaware.

Imam of Agaka Central Mosque, Asa-Dam, Utaz Yusuf Murtala (Olopoewa) said this on Friday during his Khutba (sermon) to make the weekly jumaat service.

He said what is happening in the society now and the rate at which people are dying calls for deep and sober reflection adding that this is the time for people to really return to Almighty Allah to attain success at the end of our journey on earth.

He said even without the issue of the rampaging coronavirus pandemic that had claimed and continue to claim numerous lives, the rate at which we continue to record death of prominent person among ourselves is indicative that it can get to us at any time.

According to him, “The other day, a friend in Britain who said he wanted to celebrate his birthday went for shopping with a friend in preparation for the event. They bought everything that wanted to use to mark the event and departed only for him to be informed that the would-be celebrant has passed on when he got home after their departure the previous day. This is somebody who was preparing and looking forward to having his birthday and he was not sick nor admitted.

“If we don’t travel to London, America or Saudi Arabia, what is happening in our community here in Ilorin is enough to get us to  increase in faith and fear of Almighty Allah and that death can visit us anytime whether we like it or not.

“There is no day we wake up now without the news of somebody’s death. When was that of the chief of Staff to the governor of Kwara State, Dr Aminu Adisa Logun. Those that have passed on after him now are countless. Just yesterday (Thursday), the former president of the IEDPU, Alhaji Abdullahi Atanda. While we were still making preparation for his burial news filtered in that another person has gone. This morning (Friday) while we were preparing to attend the burial of someone who died, we heard the Khalifa to late Apaokagi has died.

“So we ask ourselves what is really the issue and what could be responsible for the incessant death being recorded in the society today unlike what we are used to witnessing before. Nobody knows who is next and that is why it is imperative to reflect and use what Allah has bestowed on us in wealth, position and goodwill to serve Him rather than envying somebody that Allah has favoured or planning to destroy them”, he added.

He said the only purpose of our creation on earth by Allah is to come and worship Him and not to acquire wealth, husbands, wives of degrees and how we can be good and assist ourselves.

“We have to be patient and know that our time is near, the only way we can be successful in both this life and hereafter is to worship almighty Allah”.
