Eid-el-Kabir: Only pilgrims required not to shave hair, cut nails before slaughtering – Salahdeen

By Mumini Abdulkareem

The Chief Imam of Olarewaju Central Mosque, Ilorin, AbdulKadir Salahudeen, has advised Muslims to strive hard to increase in performance of meritorious deeds during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, the twelfth month of Islamic lunar month.

Salaudeen made this known while delivering his Khutba (sermon) during the Jumaat service held on Friday.

According to him, this period is a very significant and important days that Muslims are advised to engage in many good deeds to earn reward from Allah.

He said “particularly pray the obligatory prayer, engage in Nafilah during the nights, supplicate to Allah and increase in alms giving and help those around you. These are the very important acts that we expect Muslim to be doing”, he noted.

On the issue of permissible actions during the period, the Imam noted that against the common position that those who intend to slaughter animals as prescribed by Allah should not remove any part of their hairs and fingers, the advice he is only meant for pilgrims and not those that are at home.

“But there is an issue which our Ulamahs have been telling us during this period that whoever that wants to do the “Adhiya”, which is to slaughter ram for Allah should not cut their finger nails or shave their hairs. Yes it has been long that we have been hearing of it and the Ulamah went to research whether it is true or not.

“But they found out it is not compulsory. The hadith that people who hold on to this issue was related only by Ummu Salamah, one of the Prophet wives and another of his wife, Aishah tried to analyse it that cutting of nails and shaving hairs and other things is prohibited for those who are going for Hajj not for the people that want to slaughter ram at home. This is the first thing that we want to correct. That you may leave your hair or finger nails, there is no sin in it once you are not in Saudi for hajj”, he noted.

On the corruption in the country, he said the information from the federal government and state government on how people are stealing is worrisome adding that the way forward appeared narrow.

“If we continue this attitude, it will be disastrous. We advice those involve to fear Allah, we should all fear Allah wherever we found ourselves. Position or portfolios should not been seen as a means of looting or perpetrating evil. If we refused to change, then the future of this country is in danger and we pray Allah to assist us to clean our country.

“We pray to Allah to help us overcome this Covid-19 and we advice people to follow all guidelines the government gave because its all to protect us”, he submitted.

On the cancelation of Eid prayer, Salahudeen said “we are following the Muslim leader in this country who is the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar and he has already advised the Ummah that we should not observe Eid congregational prayer this year.

“Everybody should pray at the Jumaat mosque that is around them in their vicinity, this will reduce crowd spread of the virus. We advised government on what to do, government did not bring anything from somewhere; they contacted the Ulamah before arriving at the decision”.
