Muslims should avoid Allah’s wrath, give Zakat, Sadaqat

By Jimoh Sulyman
Muslims have been enjoined to increase in their charity and alms giving to the needy and less privileged in the society because it is the only way to rid the Society of the scourge of poverty.
This was made known by the Chief Imam of Osere/Oko-Erin/Odokun Central Mosque, Imam Yakub Isiaq while addressing the congregation during his sermon on Friday shortly before leading them in the two-unit weekly prayer.
The cleric who emphasised on the importance of Zakat and Sadaqah in Islam and also in our interpersonal relationships noted that the objective is to alleviate the trend of poverty in our society.
The sermon themed “Benefit of Zakat and Sadaqah” was targeted at narrowing the gap between the two societal class, which is the rich and poor, and also to reduce the poverty level in the society.
He said Zakat, which is the third pillar of Islam is mandated upon the Muslims once they are eligible whereby they are expected to give out 1/40 of the wealth they accumulated over a period of a year to the poor adding that Sadaqah can be given by anyone regardless of their wealth to a person in need.
The Cleric harped on the importance of charity, stating that it has the power to reduce and ultimately end poverty in the society.
Imam Yakub emphasised on the importance of giving charity and narrated from the tradition of the noble Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that “there are two angels who come to earth daily to pray that those that spend on the cause of Allah to be replenish in folds, while also pleading to Allah to take the wealth of those that doesn’t”.
He also stated that, “People that give charity are the best of people in the sight of Allah and they are the ones that will benefit the most”.
According to him, giving of charity brings unquantifiable peace to the heart of the giver adding that Islam disproves miserliness. “Giving of charity also brings peace to the heart of the giver, Islam disproved miserliness because nothing last forever but Allah.
“Spending from what Allah gives to you doesn’t exhaust it, also being tight fisted on one’s possessions doesn’t make it last forever”.
He however lamented the neglect of the rich towards this noble practice of Islam, leaving their fellow Muslims and humanity in poverty when they have the power to help.
The Imam reiterated that everything in the world is owned by Allah and it is He who will inherit everything. He stated that “Verily Allah is the everlasting Inheritor who will inherit everything because He owns it in the first place”.
He called on the people to fear Allah if they want things to go smoothly for them as individuals and society at large.
He encouraged the faithful to be helpful to one another upon good deeds and not dissuade people from following the path of Allah.
Isiaq also urged the people to always be dutiful to their parents who brought them to the world and also their neighbors and never should they speak to the orphans with reproach and those that we’re superior to.
The cleric reiterated the call of the noble Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to the Muslim to always foster love and brotherhood among themselves. He described him as a mercy upon all of mankind and a worthy example to be emulated by all.
The Imam dissuaded the people from usurping other people right. “Allah dislike anyone who forcefully takes what belongs to other persons because they have more strength than those persons. This is because Allah Himself is Al-Jabbar, who holds sway over everyone and everything”.
He thereafter urged the congregation to always seek for Allah’s forgiveness from all their misdeeds as it is only Allah that accepts repentance and bless any servant of His that has found his/her way back to Him after wandering in the wilderness of disbelief”.
