2 mobbed for motorcycle theft in Ilorin

Two suspected motorcycle thieves simply identified as Tunji and Dare, escaped death by the whiskers last Thursday when they were beaten to a pulp by angry mob in Ilorin, Kwara State.

They were mobbed on the outskirt of the state capital; Eiyenkorin, on the fateful day for stealing a motorcycle.

Speaking to Pilot Crime, one of the victims, Lateef Alowonle said the thieves attempted to rob him of his Bajaj motorcycle.

“I had gone to visit a friend whose wife had just put to bed at Eiyenkorin. I parked my motorcycle outside my friend’s house but unknown to me the thieves had rolled it away from where I parked it with the intention of making away with it.

“Fortunately, my friend’s brother who was walking along the road sighted the thieves trying to kick start the motorcycle and accosted them.

“He recognised the motorcycle as the one earlier parked in front of his brother’s house and then raised the alarm, which attracted people around.

“My friend’s brother put a call to me and we rushed to the scene. The thieves initially claimed the motorcycle is for one of them. I was asked to prove ownership of my motorcycle, which I did with the documents I had on me. This made the people to descend on them. They confessed that it was their first robbery attempt.

It was learnt that the suspect confessed that they wanted to sell off the motorcycle to raise capital to start up a business.

“The thieves said they had done various menial job without breakthrough and so decided to go into crime to set up a barbing salon and get equipment.”

They were however said to have been released by the angry mob after intervention by passers-by, who pleaded on their behalf.

In a related development, a yet to be identified man was nabbed while attempting to rob a motorcycle belonging to one Lukman in Ganmo area.

It was gathered that the suspect was caught trying to kick start the motorcycle, which was parked in front of the owner’s shop.

It was further gathered that the suspect’s accomplice had distracted the owner by posing as a customer.

A resident of the area, Daudu Aliyu told our reporter that the owner of the motorcycle, who is a phone accessories trader sighted the suspect trying to unlock his bike and raised the alarm, which attracted people.

“The suspect, who posed as a customer took to his heels while the main culprit was unlucky as he was nabbed and beaten blue black by angry mob,” he added.
