By Mutiat Olushola

Barely two and a half months to the expiration of the tenure of Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, there are indications that the institution’s council would shortlist names of contenders for the office in a fortnight.

A competent source, who spoke to National Pilot on condition of anonymity disclosed that about 30 candidates including indigenes of Ilorin, have so far shown interest in the position.

Amongst the 30 candidates who are likely to be nominated according to the source are Professor Hassan Saliu; Professor Bayo Lawal; Professor S.B. Sule; the University’s Director Laboratory/ Products Centre, Professor Suleiman Ageh; Director, Academic Planning, Professor Abayomi Omotesho and the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Professor Ahmad Abdulsalam.

It was learnt that the university council chaired by a retired permanent secretary from Lagos State, Dr.  A.J. Oyekan, alongside two Federal Ministry of Education representatives as well as two other university council members had sat to deliberate on the process of nomination earlier this week.

According to the source, the process of interview for nominated candidates would commence shortly after they might have been shortlisted.

It was gathered that more Ilorin emirate candidates may be shortlisted as against previous contest for the office.

Recall that Professor Salihu, an indigine of Ilorin, had previously keenly contested the seat with Professor Ambali, but lost to the latter.

It was, however, gathered that other candidates who are competent and qualified for the post may be sourced and picked for nomination.

When contacted for comment, the Director, Corporate Affairs of the university, Mr Kunle Akogun said it was an administrative issue, which he had no knowledge of.
