Kwara to host Inter-Club Badminton tourney

As many as 120 veteran badminton players from Lagos, Niger and the FCT are expected to participate in a two-day championship tagged “Ilorin 2017” from Sept. 29 to Sept. 30.

Chairman of the championship’s Local Organising Committee (LOC), Wahab Oba, told newsmen last Friday in Ilorin that arrangements were already in top gear for the event.

The championship, which is dubbed the Second Inter-Club Badminton Championship, is being hosted by the Kwara Stadium Badminton Veterans Club.

It will feature players from seven clubs, including the Country Club of Ikeja, Police College Badminton Club at Ikeja, Abuja City Club, Zuma Badminton Club and Bida Badminton Club.

Oba, who is the Chief Press Secretary to the Kwara State Governor, said necessary arrangements were being perfected to ensure a successful outing for all the clubs.

“The championship will help in exposing the talents at the host club, as well as its hospitality and that of the state,” he said.

The club’s Captain, Sambo Magaji, said 120 veteran players would feature in the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, mixed doubles and the executive veterans game. “The executive veterans event will feature participants who are over 50 years in age,” he said.

Sambo, who is the Registrar of Kwara State College of Education (Technical), Lafiagi, explained that participants were expected in Ilorin as from Thursday for the 2-day event.

“Members of our club have however started training and mapping out strategies on how to excel during the championship.

“Also, important personalities, including the President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria are expected to grace the occasion,” he added.
