Strong indications emerged last night, that Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Alhaji Is-haq Kawu Modibo may join the gubernatorial race for 2019 in Kwara State, National Pilot exclusively gathered.
According to a highly placed source who, is in the know about the alleged governorship plot but preferred to speak on strict anonymity, Modibo’s emissaries have started reaching out to politicians in the state to fly his candidacy.
It was not clear under which party the NBC boss may run for the top seat in 2019.
Modibo was recently appointed the commission’s boss by the President Muhammadu Buhari -led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration after identifying with the party during the 2015 presidential elections.
The NBC boss is believed to be a card carrying member of the APC loyal to the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
The source disclosed that “from all indications, it seems the NBC boss is already warming up to test the political waters for the governorship seat in the state, come 2019.
“The project is already in the pipeline, I can tell you and some of his emissaries have started reaching out to politicians in the state to fly his candidacy.
“The issue is expected to gain momentum as the election draws nearer and they are looking to recruit politicians they believe can deliver the project both from the APC and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who will later be fused as another APC wing in the state,” the source added.
When contacted last night over the issue, Modibo neither confirmed nor denied his alleged interest but maintained he remained a staff of NBC.
However, unconfirmed report from another top source last night said Modibo had met some stakeholders in the state regarding the issue.
The source added that the meeting also included, “combined members of the APC and the PDP loyal to his course from Ilorin South in Kwara central region of the state,” where he reportedly declared his gubernatorial ambition few months back.
Although not yet official, both the ruling APC and opposition PDP may pick their governorship candidates from central amidst strong agitations from Kwara North region.
Another source, who spoke on the issue, said Modibo is highly interested in the race and is working to get the structure of the party with a highly placed Federal Government employee before making his ambition public.
This was the transcript of telephone conversation between Modibo and our reporter, last night:
