Kwara ’89 athlete lament over neglect of state stadium
The athletes that took part at the National Sports Festival in Ilorin in 1989, tagged Kwara 89 has lamented over the neglect of some facilities at the state stadium complex, Ilorin.
Speaking with Pilot Sports at the weekend, Mr. Segun Ayeni, a squash player who has won many laurels for the state in squash game said, Kwara stadium used to be a very good stadia during 70s and 80s, good facilities with good hostels and a lot of most of the national teams used to camp here.
“Kwara use to be lively in terms of big competitions, the hostels always filled up with great athletes and many tapped from their experienced.
“Looking at the stadium now, a lots of things have gone, many facilities have been grounded and all the environment is bushy and no tractors to clear the grasses.
“Though, it used to be bushy then but we have like three tractors here, which they use to clear the grasses. That time, we have a lot of snakes around the stadia, including big snake like anaconda.
“A lot of things need to be changed here. I want to implore the state government to look at those facilities and replace them, the Indoor Sports Hall”, the former state athlete begged.
