Suspected highway robber killed in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has shot dead, a suspected highway robber, in the early hours of yesterday.

The suspect was killed at Ososa junction along the Shagamu-Ore Expressway while some alleged members of the gang escaped with gunshot wounds.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the operatives of the Federal Special Armed Robbery Squad received a distress call that robbers had blocked the expressway at about 2.30am and were dispossessing people of their valuables.

Oyeyemi said, “On receiving the distress call, the officer in charge of FSARS, Uba Adam, led his men to the scene where the robbers reportedly engaged them in gun duel which lasted for about 45 minutes.

“At the end of the encounter, one of the robbers was shot dead, while others escaped with gunshot injuries.”

According to the command, two locally made single-barrel guns and 78 live cartridges were recovered from them.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, who commended his men for the prompt response to the distress call, appealed to members of the public, especially hospitals, to quickly inform the police if anybody with gunshot wounds who approaches them for treatment.
