Why I awarded scholarship to Unilorin medical student – Lukman Mustapha
The Chief Executive Officer of Sobi FM, Mallam Lukman Mustapha, yesterday, said the dearth of manpower in the health sector made him to award, Kamaldeen Jimoh, a 100 level student of the department of Medicine, University of Ilorin, full scholarship.
Speaking during a ‘thank you’ visit to him at his residence in Ilorin, by mother of Kamaldeen, Hajia Jimoh, Mustapha said, “When I got the message from the Director General of Fresh Insight Foundation, Com. Abdulrasheed Akogun, I was touched because I know how competitive Unilorin admission is, not to talk of medicine admission.
“My wife wanted to study medicine at University of Ilorin, but her cut-off mark was her undoing, so I know the importance of this admission and that is why I decided assist him realise his ambition of becoming a doctor.
“All our hospitals are nothing to write home about. We have dearth of manpower in the health sector and we cannot afford to lose the opportunity of having Kamaldeen miss out because of lack of fund.
“I have been sponsoring no fewer than 300 students to higher institutions in Nigeria for the past 15 years, but Kamaldeen’s case is a break away from the norm,” Mustapha stressed.
He however advised the recipient to be dedicated to his studies in order to come out in flying colours even as he warned that getting medicine admission does not guarantee he’ll become a doctor.
Earlier, the only surviving parent of Kamaldeen, Hajia Jimoh said the family had been through a lot following the demise of her husband in 2012.
“I just don’t know how to appreciate you sir, when my son was offered admission to study medicine at the University of Ilorin, I was happy and sad at the same time, because I had no realistic way of paying the tuition fee and other requirements, but with your assistance I am happy I’ll one day be called doctor’s mother,” she stated. She however prayed for God’s continued blessing for Mustapha and the Fresh Insight Foundation.
