NPFL: Can Lokosa beat Samad, Alfred, Effiong to top scorer?
Inform Kano Pillars striker, Lokosa Junior has talked up his chances of winning the 2017-18 Nigeria Professional League top scorer award and his side winning the league title.
Despite scoring at least a goal in each of his clubs last 6 games with a perfect goal to a game record of 6 goals in 6 games, the striker has refused to be drawn in the battle for the top scorer gong.
The former First Bank strike brace in Kano Pillars’ 2-0 victory over Plateau United in the matchday 6 fixture ensured that Sai Masu Gida took the maximum points at the Sani Abacha Stadium to continue to stay within the top three teams in the NPFL standing.
Although he pinpointed God, his teammates, and his hard work as reasons to his sparkling form, his confidence and his teammates’ effort can help Kano Pillars win the tile again.
“I am thankful to God, it’s not by my power but through Him. I try my best every day to be better, however, the collective effort at Kano Pillars is helping my form.
“I can’t say much about finishing as league top scorer, although all strikers have got personal goal target, set for themselves, but I will like to keep that for now. My efforts coupled with other players effort can help this team win the league title.”
Kano Pillars who have won the Nigeria Professional Football League title on four different occasions (2007–08, 2011–12, 2013, 2014) remain the only team to have won it on three consecutive seasons.
Lokosa’s enthusiasm at the prospect of his second season in the Nigeria Professional Football League is high, and he has set targets for himself and his club.
Lokosa was signed from second division side First Bank FC at the beginning of last season and after making an appreciable impact on his debut campaign in the topflight, the attacker is eager to move to the next level.
“It was a dream come true for me when I was signed by Pillars. I made my mark in the National League and I will say that I was not surprised that big clubs knocked on the doors of my former club. I am pleased to be here and the first day of training has been awesome,” Lokosa said.
“I will say that I used last season to stabilize with Pillars being a newcomer and I hope to explode barring injuries this coming season.
“I scored some crucial goals for my team last season and I desire to get even more during the 2017-18 season.”
Lokosa is in best form of his life and the striker hinted that even though he won’t be setting a certain amount of goal as target, he would like to better his last season’s mark and also ensure that Sai Masu Gida return to the pinnacle of Nigerian football.
“I won’t be setting any goal target but I will like to score lots of goals and also help my team. Part of the reasons I came to this club was because of their rich history but in recent seasons we have come short of expectations.
“We are ready to bounce back. We showed little sign of what we can achieve in the coming season with what the two pre-season tournaments that we won in Ilorin and Kano,” he noted.
With his current performance, Lokosa is favoured to win the 2017/18 NPFL season ahead of Ndifreke Effing of Akwa United, Stephen Alfred, Kwara United and Samad Kadir of Lobi Stars of Makurdi who are on five goals this season.
