Police Confirms arrest over fake INEC voting centre in Offa
The Kwara State Police Command last night reacted to the discovery of an illegal INEC voting centre in Offa, Kwara State.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ajayi Okasanmi in a telephone chat on the issue last night confirmed the arrest of one person in relation to the incident adding that investigation was still ongoing over the matter.
According to Okasanmi, “Yes, we are aware of the issue and have already arrested one of the culprits. That is what I can say on it so far and investigation is still ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the whole issue.
Pilot Politics could not established last night whether the issue has any political influence or was done purely on fraudulent motive to dupe citizens who have complained about slow pace of the process by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
It was gathered that those that were registered where charged a fee for the print out for their registration.
On Friday, INEC had said it had uncovered an illegal voter registration centre in Offa, Kwara State.
Its Administrative Secretary in Kwara, Paul Atser, made this known in a statement in Ilorin on Friday, a copy of which was forwarded to this medium.
“It has come to the notice of Independent National Electoral Commission, Kwara State that some unscrupulous persons are carrying out illegal registration of voters in Offa Local Government area,” Mr. Atser said.
According to him, the perpetrators of the illegal registration were using Corel Draw application to change the particulars in a scanned INEC PVC.
The INEC official said one suspect was arrested and undergoing interrogation by the police.
“The general public is advised to be watchful and ensure that they go to only INEC designated registration centers to be captured for the PVC,” Atser added.
He said a list of all designated centers were available at the INEC State office as well as INEC offices in the 16 local government councils in Kwara.
