Suspected kidnapper beaten to pulp in Ilorin

A suspected kidnapper was early hours of yesterday beaten to a pulp by residents of Ogunshola area off Asa Dam Road in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, National Pilot reports.

According to a motorcycle rider who simply gave his name as Rafiu, the suspect popularly known as Mumini normally lurks around the area but was suspected to kidnap a teenager in the environs. Residents of the area were said to have accosted him, pounced on him heavily while dragging him along Asa Dam Road.

“The suspect normally moves around this Ogunshola Street and he is known by the name Mumini. He was confronted by residents this morning who suspected that he wanted to kidnap a kid. But the boys around stamped on him, beat him mercilessly and dragged him along Asa Dam Road.

“Later, men of the police force intervened and whisked him away from the crowd,” he said.

Also, a woman who craved anonymity confirmed the suspect’s name as Mumini adding that he is regularly noticed in the area.

“The man usually stays around Ogunshola Street and he is well known by people there. But very early this morning, people felt that he wanted to kidnap a kid but was beaten by some residents in the area.

“While being beaten, someone uttered that his name is Mumini but he vehemently denied that name saying he is instead Babatunde. The residents dragged him along the road towards Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) secretariat before the policemen intervened and took him away,” she divulged.

It was later gathered that the suspect was taken to General Hospital for treatment by officers of the B Divisional Police Station, Surulere.

When contacted, the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi said the suspect is presently receiving treatment in the hospital and that no one has come to claim that he attempted kidnapping their child.
