Fear grips Kwara ‘okada’ riders as robbers disguise as passengers to snatch motorcycles

There is apprehension among commercial motorcyclists in Ilorin, Kwara State as robbers now disguise as passengers to rob them of their motorcycles at gunpoint, Pilot Crime can report.

It was ĺearnt that the men of the underworld carry out the nefarious acts in the night at various parts of the metropolis.

Dark spots identified for this crime are Atiku road, Adewole Estate; Cemetery road, Osere;  Asa-Dam road and Gaa-Imam area, among others.

Some motorcyclists who spoke to our reporter narrated how they were dispossessed of their motorcycles by armed robbers.

A commercial motorcyclist, Lanre Alao, said he was robbed of his Bajaj motorcycle at gunpoint by a supposed passenger, near Dangote office, along Asa-Dam road, penultimate week.

Another motorcyclist, Muftau Rasaq, disclosed that he was attacked by a passenger along Osere road recently.

“I picked the passenger from Osere and were heading for Irewolede; when  we got to the Muslim cemetery road, he suddenly ordered me to stop.

“I thought he wanted to alight in order to ease himself, but the next thing I saw was that he put a gun to my head. I had no choice than to surrender my motorcycle, ” he narrated.

According to him, the case was reported at the B Divisional police station, adding that efforts by the police to recover his motorcycle since then have not yielded result.

Meanwhile,  operatives of F-SARS, Kwara  State police command have arrested  a 34- year-old man, Jamiu Idowu for dispossessing one Mohammed Ndako of his motorcycle in Ilorin,  last Sunday,

According to a police source, the suspect and his accomplice were knocked down by a vehicle while attempting to escape with the motorcycle.

It was learnt that Ndako had picked the suspects at Osere junction and when they reached along cemetery road they alighted.

“The robbers pretended as if they wanted to pay their fares but descended on the motorcyclist. Their accomplice emerged from the bush armed with local guns and threatened to kill their victim,” the source said.

He was reportedly robbed of his motorcycle but luck ran out on the robbers while they were trying to escape through Yidi road as a vehicle that was on their trail knocked them down.

Two of the robbers were said to have escaped and still at large.

The source disclosed that the suspects confessed to the crime during interrogation and have given lead which could assist the police in effecting arrest of the two suspects who are at large.

When contacted to get his reaction on the development, the state police Spokesperson, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi  said he is unaware of the issue.
