Neville slams referee Atkinson over Aguero’s penalty
Manchester United legend Gary Neville slammed the decision by referee Martin Atkinson not to award a penalty against his old side during the Manchester derby against Manchester City on Saturday.
City was trailing 3-2 with around 10 minutes left to play when Sergio Aguero appeared to have been fouled inside the penalty area.
However, referee Atkinson waved play on; as United held on to put City’s title triumph on hold. But Neville could not believe the call and claimed not only should it have been a spot kick, Young could have been sent off.
“It looked a penalty all day long, it was a reckless challenge by Young,” Neville said on commentary.
“He flew into the challenge. Martin Atkinson had a big decision to make but it did look a penalty from up here.
“De Bruyne plays the pass and you think it’s perfect. It’s a bad challenge from Young. He follows through with his right leg into the shin of Aguero.
“It’s not just a penalty; it is close to being a red card as well. United have got away with one there. Young is lucky. (Pep) Guardiola has every right to be incensed.”
