In a bid to reduce nefarious activities among youths, the Lions Club International, District 404B2, Nigeria has commissioned a vocational block at Borstal Institution, Ganmo area of Ilorin.
The club also at the weekend donated sewing machines, hair dryer, computers and welding tools to the school under the leadership of Kwara State Comptroller of Prisons, Mrs Akinwale Folashade Olukemi.
Recalled that the Federal Government established the centre in Kwara State to rehabilitate and counsel youths who may have mental or other challenges through drug abuse, cultism and other vices.
Speaking at the event, the District Governor, Elder Ayobola Samuel said, “what informed our action is that the last time we visited the college, we discovered that they lack some basic facilities and we initiated this project to at least support the institution”.
Ayobola however charged parents to train their wards with the fear of God as leaders of tomorrow.
He said, “as our children are the future, therefore proper upbringing in God fearing manner should be our priority as charity they say, begins at home.”
Speaking, the Controller of Prison and Principal of the institute, Mrs Olukemi commended the Lions Club for construction and commissioning of the additional training centre in the institute.
She said, the new block will enable the students of the institution to learn catering, tie and dye/batik, soap making, head tie washing, tailoring, welding, aluminium work, knitting, electrical Electronics and shoe making among others.
She said, “this great opportunity would avail the students a wider option to pick from areas of interest and it is our believe that these students will benefit from this skills acquisition profitably.”
Speaking further, she said, the college runs normal academic session like conventional Secondary Schools. “We have students for JSS 1-JSS3 with trained and experienced personnel who handle the students’ psychological need.”
According to her, they give access to religious bodies to teach the students the acceptable way of God and also sporting activities.
