Media Watch warns against incessant killings in Nigeria
The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has warned against incessant killings in the country especially in Benue, Nassarawa, Borno and Zamfara states.
The group in a statement on Tuesday by the National Cordinator, Ibrahim Abdullahi, described the latest killing of 19 members of a church including two Reverend Fathers in Benue State as tragic and frightening.
It said, “with the latest criminal act, Benue State thus assumed the position of the most volatile, unsafe and insecure state in the country as no day passes without recording a crime – mostly killings?”
The group therefore called on President Muhammad Buhari to do the needful by taking immediate action to restore peace and stability in the nation.
“The President can do this by sanctioning all that are connected with effective and efficient security in the country. This is the promise he made few weeks ago; when he visited the some states affected by the carnage,” the statement read.
MMWG however called on all Christians not to misconstrue the latest criminal act in Benue State as being targeted at a religious group rather they should view it as purely acts of criminality aimed at setting true believers against themselves.
“These criminals targeted Imams, Islamic Scholars and Muslim worshippers and they are killing them in their mosques in Maiduguri, Bama, Damboa and Madagali in Borno State. Similar crimes are being committed in Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba State including the well-known abduction of innocent school children in Yobe and Borno states.
“We call on Muslims all over the country to be peaceful, prayerful and refrain from any act that could jeopardise the peace currently prevailing in Nigeria. FG and state governments should watch out for rumour-mongers who out of political, religious and criminal motives might want to cause a breach of peace.
“ We must say no to those who want to bring chaos to Nigeria; however, the power presently lie with the Federal and state governments to deliver on their mandates especially on provision of security, good governance, fight against corruption, provision of infrastructure and revamping of our ailing economy,” the MMWG said.
