Man remanded for police impersonation, extortion

Magistrate court sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital yesterday remanded a 43 years old man, Segun Matthew for alleged police impersonation and extortion in Ilorin.
He was however charged to court for the offences of false impersonation and extortion contrary to section 179 and 294 of penal code law.
The First Information Report revealed that the accused person of Ojo-Iya street, Ilorin introduced himself to people as State Intelligent Bureau (SIB) personnel.
It added that Matthew went to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Secretariat, Asa Dam road, Ilorin to scare people with a toy gun and police belt.
“On sighting the police, you took to your heel, when given hot chase, you were later arrested and during the investigation at SIB police headquarters, the toy gun and police belt used to terrorise people were recovered…” The FIR stated.
During the proceedings, the prosecutor, Sergeant Sanni Abdullahi informed the court that police investigation into the matter is still ongoing urging the court for an adjournment.
The accused counsel, Abdulahi Sulyman however prayed the court to grant his client bail on health ground.
He said the accused indulged in the act because he’s having mental challenges.
He added that “at this stage, he’s still presumed innocent, equally, we submit that the alleged offences are bailable. He’s not the type that jumps bail if given the privilege. We urged my lord to admit him to bail,” he pleaded.
In his response, the prosecutor urged the court to discountenance Matthew counsels prayer’s saying if granted bail, it will affect the course of police investigation.
The magistrate who ceded to the submission of the prosecutor added that he doesn’t have certified prove before the court that the accused is mentally sick. He however remanded him in prison custody while the case was adjourned to 14th May, 2018 for further mention
