The menace of social vices such as drugs abuse, premarital sex, thuggery among Nigerian youths have caught the attention of the authority of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, as the Department of Biological Science held a summit in that regard.

Speaking last week at the institution’s library, on the theme: ‘Kick against social vices among Nigerian students’, the Head of Department, Biological Science, Mrs. Toibat Ayilara, said the high rate of immoral conduct among the youth prompted need for the summit, which is targeted at educating the ‘ignorant’ youths.

According to her, “We are here on a summit where we invite seasonal experts to talk and educate our students on the effect of premarital sex, drug abuse, abortion and other vices that are rampant in the society today.

“On the issues of premarital sex, I would advice our youths to exercise patience as they could endanger their lives by indulging in the act.”

Ayilara charged the Kwara State Government to collaborate with Non Governmental Organisations in order to stage frequent campaign and summit as a medium through which youths can be enlightened on the inherent implication of all the vices.

She however appealed to parents on the imperativeness of tutoring their wards in line with moral principles of life.

Speaking in the same vein, a lecturer at department, Mr Bello Zakariya, said the summit was organised under a platform called Resource Builder Initiative, as plans are in top gear to take the summit to other tertiary institutions across the state.

“My appeal to the youth is that they should know that their future is paramount and they should guard it keenly by desisting from acts that could pose threat to their dreams,” Zakariya said.

It would be recalled that the Federal Government frowned at incessant intake of codeine among youths which has continued to pose both psychological and social problem to them.
