Kwara State Government on Saturday conducted promotion examination  for  no fewer than 8,953 teaching and non teaching staff in the state under the Teaching Services Commission (TESCOM) in Ilorin.

The candidates are those on level 8 to 17, who were due for promotion between 2015 and 2017.

The examination was conducted in nine centres across Ilorin metropolis namely; Queen Elizabeth’s College,  Government Girls Secondary School, Oko- Erin; Odokun Waziri Senior Secondary School; St. Anthony Secondary School; C&S Secondary School and Government Secondary School.

Some of the participants who spoke to National Pilot complained of irregularities such as missing examination numbers,  names and centres;  late arrival of materials and inadequate number of invigilators.

Speaking during the exercise, the Executive Chairman of TESCOM, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdulrasaq said the examination was long overdue.

“We got approval from the state Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed to conduct the exams and then we set the template for it.”

He said that out of the 10, 737 staff that qualified for promotion, only 8,953 sat for the examination, adding that the remaining are junior employees who does not need written test to be promoted.

On the irregularities that almost marred the exercise in some centres, the chairman explained that the late arrival of examination materials was as a result of the anticipated monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

“We thought there was going to be sanitation exercise being the last Saturday of the month so we told the candidates to come by 11am and it resulted in the delayexperienced in some centres.

“When we went round the nine centres, we discovered that some of the participants didn’t check their names on the board before going to the centres, which resulted in confusion,” he further explained.

He disclosed that the candidates were drawn from 341 schools across the state even as he assured that subsequent exercise would be less cumbersome as candidates’ examination details would be placed online.

He further said that there would be oral interview after the consultant in charge of the examination must have submitted results.

He, however, tasked civil servants to be more committed as the essence of the examination is to strengthen the education sector in the state.
