Security: Ahmed seeks KWHA’s approval of state share of $1bn excess Crude Account fund

The Kwara State House of Assembly has received request for its approval for the deduction of the state’s share of the $1bn from the Excess Crude Account (ECA).

The funds are meant for the purchase of military equipment in the bid of the Federal Government to combat the security challenges bedevilling the country.

The request was contained in a letter by the state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, to the Speaker, Dr Ali Ahmad, dated 23rd May, 2018.

The Governor in the letter explained that in view of the prevailing Boko Haram insurgency and Herdsmen/Fulani attacks, the Federal Government had to embark on procurement of additional military and other essential security equipment and gadgets.

“l hereby wish to request for the approval of this honourable House for the deduction of Kwara State Government share of the N1billion estimated cost of procuring military equipment for the Armed Forces “, the statement said.

The Governor while thanking the lawmakers for their usual cooperation called for urgent approval of the request.

The Deputy Speaker, Hon Matthew Okedare (Jebba) who presided over plenary directed the House committee on Businesses and Rules to take note of the request for further legislative action

The House is yet to fix a date for the deliberation on the Governor’s request.

Meanwhile, the legislature has commended the state government and the authority of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin for complying with its resolutions, in ensuring refund of excess tuition fee by some students of the institution.

The House equally at its Tuesday’s sitting called on the state government to put necessary machinery in motion for accelerated grassroots sports development in the state.

The resolution followed a Motion on the Need to celebrate the victory of Kaiama LGEA School at the just concluded Channels Kids Cup International Tournament, raised by member representing Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe Constituency, Hon Ahmed Ibn Mohammed.

The House which called for reward of the pupils with scholarship by the state government advocated effective funding and collaboration of corporate bodies in exposing and harnessing hidden talents at the grassroots for accelerated sports development.
