The National University Commission (NUC) has been advised to adopt conference-marking strategy of the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) in order to curb the issue of sex-for-marks in the university system.
The NUC was also told to consider the use of Computer Based Test (CBT) for continuous assessment adding that the two panaceas would reduce the syndrome.
This was the thrust of the sensitisation campaign on Sexual Harassment and Drug Abuse held recently in Ilorin by the National Council for Women Society (NCWS).
Delivering his speech at the programme, President of the group, Hajia Barakat Atunse noted that sexual harassment and drug abuse are two social vices contributing to the retrogressive development of the society.
While noting that the scourge is not only rampant in higher institutions of learning, she said most harassers and addict find themselves pinned down with sociological, physiological and economic factors adding that there should be concerted efforts to work against factors undermining the fight in the society.
“On drug abuse, we must go to the root by tracing the chain of movement of drugs from manufacturers to the final users.
“Sound regulatory law and (implementation) must be given special attention by our legislators to reduce the menace to the minimum.
“We cannot leave everything on the doorsteps of the government agents. The fighting of social vices is a collective responsibility of all and sundry. Our religious leaders, opinion leaders, agenda setters, traditional rulers are implored to use their wisdom in reshaping the minds of our youth in a manner that would dissuade them from drug abuse,” she added.
