By Mike Adeyemi

The Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), of Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, has threatened to down tool in order to register their displeasure over unpaid salaries.

The Chairman of the union, Comrade Najeem Anas stated this on Monday during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Barr. Abdulahi Alikinla in his office in Ilorin.

“On behalf of the entire NASU members, Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin branch, we are here to congratulate you officially on your appointment as Commissioner for Tertiary Education, and to inform you of some of the challenges we are facing,” the Chairman said.

Speaking further, Anas said the union appreciated the Kwara State Government for increasing the college’s budget to N500 million but lamented that the institution could not generate substantial funds to pay salaries regularly.

He added that whenever there were challenges NASU would humbly settle for dialogue.

“We want the Kwara State Government to pay last year’s outstanding salaries amounting to 180 per cent. It is a known fact that all workers want promotion, but in our own case, promotion were done without financial backing. 2014, 2015, 2016 promotions were done without cash backing as only letters were issued.

“Infrastructural decay, non release of accreditation money and other shortages are reasons we are seeking government’s attention.

“We urged the state government to do the needful if they expect the staff of the College of Education, Ilorin to be productive,” Anas said.

Responding, Barr. Alikinla appreciated the union for maintaining peace by cooperating with the management; he however promised that their grievances will be attended to.

“I thank you for channelling your displeasure through dialogue. Whatever are your grievances, you must tailor it amicably.

“I believe in action and whatever we discussed here today, I will follow it up with action. No government would want its workforce to go on strike. The bane to this paucity of fund is as a result of shortage in federal allocation,” he stated.

According to the commissioner the state government had made provision for accreditation adding that he will speak with the management of the college over all the ranging issues, soon.

“I promise you all your agitations will be solved, soon,” Alikinla promised.
