By Matthew Denis
The Schools and Colleges Trade Group Council of the Non Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has called on the Federal Government to address insecurity, new minimum wage, corruption, poor power supply, unstable economy and poor funding of the education sector.
These were the union’s resolutions at the end of its 5th meeting held recently in Akure, Ondo State capital and made available to this medium.
The communiqué which was duly signed by the Deputy President/Chairman of the Union, Alhaji Yekeen Kareem Agunbiade and the General Secretary, Adeyemi Mohammed noted that the Council condemned the persistent killings of innocent Nigerians in Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Zamfara and Kaduna among other states .
“The Council frowned at the attitude of some state governors that abused the series of bailout funds given to them for the payment of salaries owed workers as well as gratuity and pension for retirees.
“The Council urges President Muhammadu Buhari to take a decision by giving workers a new sustainable national living wage.
“To enhance the economy and improve the value of Naira, the Federal Government should ensure stable power supply by calling on the Distribution Companies (DISCOS) to upgrade their capacities, honest billing system and provision of prepaid meters to customers.”
The communiqué further tasked the government on funding of the education sector in order to ensure better learning conditions, teachers’ welfare and improved inspectorate mechanism for maximum output.
On remittance of check off dues and other deductions, the union condemned the activities of state governments and deduction of workers’ salary. It urged all labour associations to synergise in finding lasting solution.
The council while appreciating President Muhammadu Buhari’s effort on corruption charged anti-corruption agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Crimes (ICPC) to extend their searchlight into more states and local governments in the country.
