Real defender aim to stop Ronaldo in their W/Cup opener

Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez aimed to stop his club teammate Cristiano Ronaldo in their World Cup opener against Portugal in the Group B.

Nacho played well on Saturday in their last pre-World Cup game against Tunisia in Krasnodar, the Real Madrid defender fulfilled his role as a utility player by filling in at left midfield once Jordi Alba was substituted and Spain switched to a back three.

The La Furia Roja won the match through a solitary goal by Iago Aspas.

“I hope that I have the chance to play against Cristiano Ronaldo, we must be focused on cancelling him out,” he explained in his post-match interview.

“The coach knows that I’m qualified to start in this position, I’m prepared.

“Everyone know that I feel more comfortable in the centre than at full back, but I’ve played big matches there.”

Krasnodar has been chosen as La Roja’s training base for the World Cup, with one of the benefits being that it isn’t a host city for the tournament.

The stadium was impressive after its 2016 opening, and the atmosphere was something which caught the defender’s eye.
