The monthly environment sanitation esercise in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, on Saturday suffered set back as a result of security agents to enfore law and waste disposal vehicles.
National Pilot observed that there was human and vehicular movements across the metropolis during the exercise scheduled for between 7am and 10am.
Some of the places visited by our reporter during the exercise monitored included Emir’s road, the Oja- Oba, Surulere, lbrahim Taiwo and Murtala Mohammed roads among others.
Several residents, who participated in the environment sanitation, could not properly dispose waste as they waited endlessly for refuse disposal vehicles.
Some people, who spoke to this medium called on the state government to ensure prompt evacuation of refuse dumped to check outbreak of diseases.
Speaking on the development, the state Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Mr. Amos Justus Sayo said contractors are responsible for evacuation refuse dumps.
The commissioner, then called on Kwara residents not to leave the exercise to government alone, noting that cleanliness and safety of the environment is the responsibility of everybody.
“The task of making the environment safe is the business of everybody in the society to eliminate airborne diseases,” he added.
The commissioner said plans are underway by the state government to commercialise refuse collection in the state to further enhance prompt evacuation waste in different parts of the state.
