Ex-National Pilot staff emerges Kwara NUJ chair

A former staff of National Pilot newspapers, Umar Abdulwahab has emerged the new chairman of the Kwara state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).

The General Editor of the medium,  Mrs Adeniyi Joke Jackson also emerged as a member of the Ex-Officio in the State Working Committee (SWC) in the election which began around noon at the NUJ secretariat today.

Abdulwahab who is now a staff of Blue Print newspapers polled 89 votes to defeat his opponent, Babatunde Jimba who scored 33 votes.

The new chairman will replace Mr Biodun Abdulkareem of the Herald newspaper chapel who spent two terms of three years following his election in 2012.

Abdulwahab and Jimba are from the Correspondents and Kwara Television chapels respectively.

Announcing the results, the chairman of the electoral committee, Murtala Atoyebi appreciated members for their perseverance and support and for the maturity displayed during the conduct of the exercise in spite of the little friction.

In his remarks, the Deputy Assistant National Secretary, Comrade Gbenga Bamidele who represented the National Secretariat at the election commended the peaceful manner the exercise was conducted which the state is noted for.

In his acceptance speech, the new chairman, Umar Abdulwahab thanked everybody for the support towards his emergence adding that the new executive shall sustain and improve on the legacies of his predecessor.

“I want to urge you all to join hands with us to take our Council to the next level.

“As the chairman of this great council,  I shall strive at all times to be just, equitable and fair to all.  I shall work with you all to build a Council that will encourage greater membership participation and improvement of members welfare”, he submitted.

He assured the out-gone chairman and the former executive that their sweat, blood, commitment and sacrifices to the council which has taken it this far will not be in vein.

He promised that the new executive will hit the ground running and ensure that the NUJ model school commenced operation by the next academic session this November.

Other members of the new executive include Vice Chairman, Mallam Mustapha Abubakar, secretary, Tayo Ayanda, assistant secretary, Mahmud Olayinka Alaya, treasurer, Ishaq Babatunde, financial secretary, Fadeyi Babajide and auditor, Ahmed Lafeef.

The second Ex officio member is Abubakar Owolabi while the state chairmen of SWAN and NAWOJ are automatic members of the SWC.

Apart from the position of the chairman,  other members of the new executive were unopposed.
