Reason psychology test is yet to commence in Kwara – FRSC

By Daniel Ayantoye

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Tuesday made known reasons psychological test is yet to commence for traffic offenders like it is already being done in some parts of the country.

Speaking in an interview in his office with this medium, the state Commander, Sunday Maku said the command is still putting necessary measures in place to ensure efficiency of the operation in Kwara.

Maku who stated that the operation will commence soon, stressed that Kwara is not the only state where the test is yet to commence.

He further explained that the operation is aimed at saving drivers from mishap on the road, adding that anyone who disobeys traffic rules may have some kind of insanity which needs laboratory observation.

“The exercise is not a psychological test that is capable of stigmatising anyone. The important thing is that we want to ensure sanity on our roads and safety of road users.

“The test is a one on one discussion, an evaluation which the result will be confidential. If the result is negative, the offender will pay fine and the vehicle will be released and if positive, a relative of the person will be asked to come and sign an undertaking that the vehicle will not be given to the same driver until our doctors certify him, the fine will be paid and the vehicle will be released to relatives of the driver.”

The commandant stated that all offences are life threatening because it is either the driver is affected or the passenger, hence the need to introduce the psychological test.

While enjoining drivers to obey traffic regulations, Maku noted that no one will be arrested if there is strict adherence to the laws.

“Some of the offenses are overloading, over speeding, wrongful overtaking, dangerous driving, road obstruction, light or sign violation, driving under alcohol or drug influence, assaulting FRSC officials on duty among others. All these laws have to be strictly adhered to if a person will not be subjected to the test,” he added.

He however stated that Kwara State command of the corps is yet to record any assault on its men.
