We did not defect from APC for selfish reasons – Gov Ahmed

By Bukola Adamo

Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has said that he did not defect from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for egotistical reasons.

The Governor dropped this hint on Monday when he received the National Executives of Oro Descendants Union (ODU), led by its President, Alhaji Uthman Tunji Balogun at the Government House, Ilorin.

Ahmed told ODU executives that he reluctantly dumped the APC when it became obvious that the people of the state, “who delivered a 100 per cent electoral victory to the party are continuously being marginalised and persecuted”.

According to the governor, all entreaties to ensure that the people of Kwara State were treated with dignity, equity and justice fell on deaf ears as a result of those routing for their personal relevance by marginalising other stakeholders.

“If it were for personal gains, I wouldn’t have left the APC as a sitting governor. The Senate President would also have been contented with the coveted position of the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Governor Ahmed said.

He added that the struggle is about the interests of Kwarans to participate effectively and meaningfully to the growth and development of Nigeria.

According to him, “Leaving the APC goes beyond self interests but the inability to create opportunities for Kwarans in an administration jointly laboured to put in place”.

The PDP, according to the governor, is a reformed and inclusive party that provides an enabling platform for members to actualise their potentials.

Governor Ahmed disclosed that Oro General Hospital is among health facilities scheduled for complete overhaul in the state’s 2018 budget, and that the government is currently in the process of acquiring electricity transformers for installation in different parts of the state. He added that the government is also working on improving water situation in different parts of the State, including Oro Kingdom.

Speaking further, Governor Ahmed said that rural roads in Oro are among several roads highlighted for rehabilitation under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), which he said will commence in September, 2018.

He also pledged that the union’s request for the elevation of Oloro of Oro to a first class monarch will be granted before the end of his administration.

Earlier, the National President, ODU, Alhaji Balogun commended Governor Ahmed for his bold attempts to change the face of the state through the provision of infrastructure and amenities capable of improving the standard of living of the people.

The president, on behalf of the nine generic communities that make up Oro kingdom, expressed appreciation to Ahmed for his prompt response to their call to upgrade the Kwara State College of Education, Oro, to a degree awarding institution, construction of Oloro Palace and the rehabilitation of Okeola- Oro/Ijomu – Oro road among others.

The union also appealed to the Governor on upgrading the stool of Oloro to a first class status, rehabilitation of interconnecting roads within the kingdom to facilitate movement of goods and services among the communities within the kingdom.
