Man City debunks offering Messi €1m a week to quit Barcelona
English Champions Manchester City has denied the report that says the club proposed to offer Lionel Messi a staggering contract that worth in excess of €1m a week for the Argentine to quit Barcelona.
A report in Mundo Deportivo says that the Etihad made an effort to sign the Barcelona maestro, with quotes attributed to their chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak forming the basis of its story.
When Manchester City’s chairman was asked about the player he regretted being unable to sign in his last 10 years, his answer was simply Messi.
The club has denied such claims that they ‘absolutely refute’ the report, adding ‘Al Mubarak provided no extra information’ as reported by Goal.
On the other hand, AS notes Manchester City did not explicitly deny their interest in the Argentine forward, while Goal claims they had held ‘a long-term interest’ in signing the Barcelona star before he signed a new contract with the Camp Nou outfit last year.
