Gas Price: Consumers call for further reduction

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumers in Ilorin, Kwara State capital have urged the Federal Government to ensure further reduction in price of cooking gas to make it affordable to more households.

Findings by Pilot Business revealed that the price of cooking gas has reduced by about 20 per cent. For instance, 12.5kg, which was sold for N6,000 now goes for N3500, 6kg now costs N1750 as against N2,600 , 5kg has reduced to N1450 from N2,200 while 3kg, which used to cost N1,500 now goes for N800.

Some consumers, who spoke to this medium, said the reduction has ameliorated their sufferings but wants further reduction for widespread affordability.

Mrs. Ramata Abiodun, a resident of Unity area of the metropolis, said with the reduction in the price of cooking gas, many households that had opted for alternatives would refill their cylinders.

“I use 12.5kg and at a point I stopped using cooking gas because of the cost of refilling my cylnder about four months ago. I started using charcoal for cooking but now the price has fallen so I refill now at N3,500.

“I want to however urged the Federal Government and concerned authorities to ensure that the cost is still reduced as it is easier to cook with gas,” she added.

Another consumer, Demola Yusuf  said ” We are happy that the price of cooking gas has gone down. I use the 6kg and it is now sold for N1750.”

He called for further reduction so that average Nigerians can afford it.

A resident of Asa Dam road, Mrs. Tope Aremu said ” The reduction in price of cooking gas is a good development for domestic users.

She stressed that further reduction will bring about brisk business for LPG retailers.

A cooking gas retailer, Mr. Abdullahi Hakeem said the level of patronage has increased as against when the price skyrocketed and consumers resorted to the use of charcoal for cooking.
