5 suspected cultists remanded for terrorising Ilorin


Last Friday, no fewer than five (5) suspected cultists were remanded in the Federal Prison by the magistrate court sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital for allegedly disturbing the peace and tranquillity of the community.

The five accused persons; Abdullahi Olarewaju, Taofeeq Sulieman, Yusuf Alao, Musa Imam and Abdullahi Abubakar were arraigned before Magistrate Olawoyin.

They were charged for the offences of criminal conspiracy, and being members of the secret cult contrary to section 97 of penal code law, and section 2, punishable under section 14 of Secret Cult and Secret Societies (Prohibition) Law 2016.

The police First Information Report (FIR) revealed that the intelligent department of the police stormed the hideout of the suspects following the report they received.

Five accused persons were however arrested on the spot while others took to their heels.

Investigation conducted at the state CIID disclosed that Abubakar is a member of Vikings secret confraternity while other suspects belongs to Eiye secret cult.

The police report further noted that the suspects are those disturbing the peace and tranquility of Ilorin.

The prosecutor, Inspector Jubril Alhassan, in his submission urged the court to remand the accused persons saying investigation is still ongoing to arrest other suspects who are large..

He added that the offences of the accused persons on the surface of the FIR is what the society frowned at.

The counsel to the accused, Barr. Abdul Tunde Gegele, applied for the bail of the accused persons. He cited 35 (5) of the 1999 Constitution and section 341 of CPC.

The magistrate in his ruling upheld the submission of the prosecutor while the matter was adjourned to November 21st, 2018.
