Mixed fortunes for Aruna Quadri, Kanu
The profile of Africa’s leading Table Tennis star, Aruna Quadri continues to rise as he won yet another title in Portugal last weekend.
Quadri achieved this feat alongside his Nigerian compatriot, Bode Abiodun after their team –Sporting defeated GDCS Juncal 3-0 to make it five Portuguese Cup title on the trot.
Playing the first game against Russian Andrei Bukin, Aruna Quadri wasted no time to dismiss his opponent with a 3-0 bashing winning 11-5, 11-2, 11-6.
The partnership of Abiodun and Diogo Carvalho completed the rout for Sporting when they overcame the duo of David Bessa and Andrei Bukin 3-0 winning 11-2, 11-4, 11-9 to lift the trophy for the fifth time in a row.
While Quadri and Abiodun were in celebration mood at the weekend, former Arsenal striker and Super Eagles skipper, Kanu Nwankwo was left in pensive mood following the invasion of suspected armed robbers at his hospitality outfit; Hardley hotels located in Victoria Island, Lagos State.
The armed robbers were said to have invaded the facility of Kanu who led Nigeria to Gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, carting away valuables such as medals, plaques and trophies won by the retired footballer during his playing career spanning two decades.
Kanu is a legend that brought smiles to the face of countless Nigerians in the colours of the national team with his exceptional skills and goals. A decorated player like him deserves no such treatment from any Nigerian hence it is important for the security agencies in the country to as a matter urgency arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the crime.
Failure to arrest the perpetrators will lead to disappointment and lack of trust in our security agents in the country. Also, should the security agents fail to unravel those behind the crime, the situation may discourage most of our athletes from investing in the country.
Already millions of Nigerians have continued to empathise with the soccer star on the ugly incident. Leading the long list of sympathisers with Kanu, who won the UEFA Champions League with Dutch club Ajax in 1995 is the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), President, Marvin Amaju Pinnick.
