Governor Ahmed Approves Release of N1.9b for SUBEB/LG Arrears
Local government workers, pensioners and basic education teachers in Kwara State are to receive one month salary today following Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed’s approval for the release of N1.9b to councils and the Kwara state universal basic education board(SUBEB).
Making the announcement in a statement issued in Ilorin, the state capital, the state commissioner of finance, Alhaji Demola Banu said Governor Ahmed approved the release of the funds as support for the local government councils and SUBEB following an additional revenue inflow into the state.
While stressing that the payments will be made from Wednesday, the commissioner said Governor Ahmed chose to support local government council workers and basic education teachers with the funds instead of deploying it for infrastructure.
According to Banu, Governor Ahmed’s decision to prioritize workers’ welfare is based on his earlier pledge and his concern for their plight on account of salary arrears which he said were caused by the drop in federal allocation.
Alhaji Banu said of the approved amount, N1.1b is for workers of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), N599m for Local Government Workers, N150m for local government pensioners and N50m for former political office holders at the local government level.
It will be recalled that Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, PDP Governorship candidate, Rt. Hon Razak Atunwa and representatives of Labour unions on Monday signed an MOU on the payment of workers’ arrears, adoption of the N30,000 minimum wage and the utilization of extraordinary revenue inflows into the state going forward.
The Labour unions subsequently endorsed Rt. Hon Atunwa and other PDP candidates in the forthcoming elections.
