The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sylvia Malomo, has urged students of the university, especially newly admitted ones to be focused and lead a purposeful life and avoid putting their money into non-productive activities such as gambling and betting of any kind.
Prof. Malomo, who gave the advice last Tuesday (January 5th, 2019) while declaring open the Three-day orientation programme for the 2018/2019 newly admitted students of the university, insisted that money given to them by their parents and well-wishers must be judiciously used in what would make life and their academic activities easy for them.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, who represented the Vice-Chancellor at the orientation programme, told the students that all staff members of the university are like loco parentis who are willing to help them to excel.
In her remarks, the Registrar of the University, Dr. (Mrs.) Folaranmi Olowoleni, advised the students to maintain a very high level of focus, and work, perseverance, commitment and adherence to the school’s rules and regulations as contained in the students’ handbook.
Dr. Olowoleni, who was represented by the Deputy Registrar, Council Office, Dr. B.L. Adisa, also said that the University of Ilorin has zero tolerance for examination malpractices, cultism, drug abuse, indecent dressing and other vices.
The Registrar advised the students to take advantage of the guidance and counsel provided by the University’s Guidance and Counselling Unit.
Also speaking, the Dean of Students Affairs, who was represented by the Sub-Dean, College of Health Sciences, Dr. U.B Enaibe, advised the students to ensure that they don’t miss classes, go for their lectures on time, have study time and to always revise lessons taught in a day on that same day.
In their words of counselling, the Deputy Chief Imam and the Chaplain of the University, Prof. Yahya Imam and Dr. Olasupo Ozagie respectively advised the students on righteousness and religious tolerance.
A member of the Dress Code Committee of the University, Dr. Raji urged then to always dress properly in line with the standard of the University Dress Code as stated in the flyers printed and also on their portal. He said refusals means violation of the set rules and regulation of the university, which may lead to expulsion from the university.
The Focal Officer of the University of Ilorin SERVICOM Unit, Mr. A.R. Sidique, advised the students to know that the Unit is committed to acknowledging their complaints, communicating intended actions within seven days and committed to addressing any complaints within one month. He advised them to be prompt at their lectures, shun cultism, abide by the schools dress code and stay away from manipulation for personal gain.
In her remarks, the National President of the Unilorin Alumni Association, Dr. (Mrs) R.O. Oduwaye, congratulated the students on their admission and urged them to take their studies seriously.
