Bursary: Gov Ahmed releases additional 20m for disbursement, this week

Following the release of additional N20million for bursary by Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, the state Scholarship Board will this week, continue disbursement  of N5,000 each to tertiary institution students of Kwara State origin.

The Chairperson of the Kwara State Scholarship Board, Barr. Fatima Yusuf made the disclosure during a telephone chat with Pilot Education on Saturday.

According to the former commissioner for Women Affairs in the state, the board is already finalising the processes for payment while disbursement is expected to commence later in the week.

She said, “We will finalise all the processes of payment on Monday (today) and commence the payment within the week.”

Barr. Yusuf however debunked reports in the media that the state government stopped payment of the bursary following the outcome of penultimate Saturday’s election.

“We never stopped the payment. We have been paying the bursary and we were at the College of Education, Ilorin last week, so we will continue from there.”

Recall that the approval of the release of additional N20million for the payment of students bursary by Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed was made public in a statement on Friday by the Kwara State Scholarship Board Chairperson.

Barr. Yusuf in the statement appreciated the leadership and membership of the National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS) for their maturity and urged them to exercise patience while the payment is being processed.

The approval brings the total sum of money released recently by the state government for students’ bursary to N50million.

NAKSS had last Friday staged a protest barricading the head office of Kwara Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS).

Speaking to this medium, the President of NAKSS, Comrade Mohammed Mancha stressed that the essence of the protest was for the state government to fulfill its promise  of releasing the N70million balance for the payment of bursary.
