Building Collapse: KWSG marks 15 structures for demolition

In a bid to ensure preventive measures against building collapse across the country, the Kwara State Government has marked 15 structures for demolition within Ilorin, the state capital.

Subsequently, the occupants of the affected structures have been directed to vacate as early as possible to save their lives and property.

Speaking during a chat with this medium, the Executive Secretary of Kwara State Physical Planning (formerly known as Town Planning), Folashade Ajiteru said, “We have taken proactive measures to mark structures that are not strong again for demolition across the metropolis.

“We have marked about 15 buildings and written to the landowners and the occupants to vacate the premises for their safety. Most of the occupants have actually left these facilities.”

According to her, there are some instances where they advised the owners of such property to renovate them if they are still strong but for those that are extremely bad, the owners were advised to sell them off or demolish.

The Executive Secretary however stressed that after the timeframe for demolition elapses, the government will determine when the structures would be demolished.

On challenges, she noted that the state government is making plans to assist them with machineries for pulling down dilapidated structures in order to save lives and property.

Some of the buildings marked for demolition are; One suspended floor (a storey building) at Ile Alase compound Idi-Ape, two suspended floor ( two storey building) along Coca Cola road, two suspended floor (two storey building) opposite CAC Church Ibrahim Taiwo road and one suspended floor ( a storey building) No. 62 Edun Street.

Others are; one suspended floor (a storey building) at Okandile compound Popo-Giwa, one suspended floor (a storey building) No. 17 Okolo compound Idi- Ape, one suspended floor (a storey building) No. 47 Niger road, two suspended floor (two storey building) at Fagba area, one suspended floor (a storey building) at Ita Amodu area, and two suspended floor (two storey building) at Kuntu area of Ilorin.

In his words, the agency’s head of field operations, Engr. Ramat Abdulquadir emphasised that they carry out soil test, certificate of completion and other guidelines from contractors handling upstairs projects for qualitative execution.
